The Red Lechwe is a graceful antelope of southern Africa’s floodplains, instantly recognizable by its reddish-gold coat, sweeping horns, and long legs adapted for bounding through water. Unlike most antelope, it thrives in marshy habitats, where it feeds on aquatic plants and can dash to safety through swamps that predators hesitate to cross. Despite its adaptability, the red lechwe is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, with habitat loss, hunting, and human encroachment reducing its numbers across much of its range. This design captures the lechwe’s elegant form in bold linocut style, with the conservation status highlighted to remind us that even iconic wetland species face growing pressures. It’s a celebration of life on the floodplains—and a call to preserve the waters that sustain it.
